It appears to have been a lot longer since I posted a proper update on here than I realised! Life really does tend to get in the way of work!

ANYWAY!

Instead of having my own website; Bearfighter.co.uk and my dA page as two separate entities, beginning next week, Bearfighter.co.uk will point to my dA page, killing two proverbial birds with one stone! This will mean I can update just the one page a lot more easily, meaning more new content to the larger community of deviantArt.

I have a couple of projects on the burner that you will start to see some sketches and pieces of design work coming out, before eventually revealing the project in all it's glory for free to my watchers :)

As you may be able to tell with my recent deviations, I've been trying out some slightly different styles and would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions on which you prefer, helping me to make more likable art for you all to look at!

Finally, upon completion of my last batch, I will shortly be reopening commissions... if anybody would like to be placed on the list, please drop me a PM and we can discuss options. I will release a full price list and slot places shortly!

Thanks for reading and happy viewing!

So as you may well know, a short while back I won an art competition and the prize included pieces of art of my request... so I thought it would be a good idea to see what these artists came up with when asked to draw my Original Character "SugarSkull" (Who I had entered for the Stan Lee Superhero Competition) ... firstly I've knocked up a sketch of SugarSkull today and have a play with the background which you can see, along with the rest of this blog here.

Thanks!

SOOOOO... in my last post I mentioned coming up with an idea after reading through some old Street Fighter manga comic books (which I have now read the entire collection by Udon... I'd recommend it!). I may have made the idea obvious, but this is what I was planning... Dragonball VS Street Fighter!!

I began to think about it and thought it seemed like it would be an exciting game... each series has a variety of characters with a counter part in the other universe... what I came up with was...

  • Goku VS Ryu
  • Vegeta VS Ken
  • Majin Buu VS Akuma
  • Gohan VS Sagat
  • Bulma VS Crimson Viper
  • Videl VS Sakura
  • Android 18 VS Chun-Li
  • Trunks VS Guile
  • Hercule VS Dan
  • Piccolo VS Dhalsim
  • Cell VS Bison
  • Frieza VS Vega

Most of these characters seem to match the other in one way or another, some are ideal matches, such as Vegeta and Ken, or Hercule and Dan!

So not to completely over-power the Dragonball characters (with Super Saiyan power-ups and the like) I decided the best way that a game could make use of these features would be through an Ultra move... during the sequence, Goku, for example would become Super Saiyan and unleash a Kamehameha upon his opponent. To make the Street Fighter characters able to match the Dragonball characters I came up with a variety of ideas... Ryu, for his ultra would be consumed by the Satsui No Hadou and become Evil Ryu, before unleashing a devastating Metsu Shoryuken! The same would work for Ken (Violent Ken), Akuma (Oni or Shin Akuma) and Bison (Psycho-energy form)

Characters such as Dhalsim would have to be used creatively... I came up with this story board for Dhalsims ultra... Yoga Deity As you can hopefully see... Dhalsim calms himself and transforms the arena into a dimensional area in which Piccolo is trapped... Dhalsim himself transforms into his "Deity" form (player 2 costume from Street Fighter 2... I always felt this was Dhalsim at his best) and sends his limbs through worm holes, which then reopen next to his opponent and pummel him before wrapping him up and charging a massive Yoga blast... Dhalsim then subtracts his limbs back through the worm holes, sending Piccolo spinning into an iminent fiery attack!

The end boss could perhaps be Buu, or Akuma, OR a fusion of both... following in the style of Marvel VS Capcom I believe many interesting scenarios and situations could come up crossing these 2 properties... one can only wish!

If anybody else has any input or ideas, please comment!!
Until next time!

So last week I was going through the loft to make some space for storing more things, and came across a box containing some comics I had collected in my childhood during the 90s. In this box was some Spawn comics, some Mortal Kombat manga comics, and most importantly; a long forgotten Street Fighter manga comic series!!

Now this comic was my first entry into the story elements of the Street Fighter 2 series... I had obviously played (and loved) Street Fighter 2, but back in those days, story didn't really matter in games, so these comics were an excellent draw for a curious kid like myself.

There are a couple of issues missing from the series in my collection, which is very unfortunate, but I can basically fill in the gaps for myself with what I do have!

What's very interesting in these comics is how much the story has been developed to this day... these almost feel like a starting point, which has spiraled and developed into the franchise we all know and love.

In these comics, the island of "Shad" was constructed by the super powers of the world to be a bustling man-made city, until it was hit with a worldwide financial crisis, causing all nations to leave the island to fend for itself... and a certain end boss to solidify himself as the ruler of Shad.

Ryu is a travelling fighter (as always)... however his personality differs very much, and one can only draw a direct comparison to him and Goku from Dragonball Z (Which gave me an idea for a piece I'm currently working on). In this manga, Ryu LOVES food and much like Son Goku, leaves piles of empty dishes and continues to eat!

Ryu defeats Balrog in the first issue and Balrog is disgraced and removed from his power as one of the 4 lords of Shadowlaw... Blanka, desperate to take Balrogs place takes it upon himself to attempt to solve Bisons problems to no avail.

It should be noted that Bison, in this series is basically a drug dealer... using a drug called "Doll" to control people opposed to using his Psycho power as more recently established.

Bison was formerly Guile's superior in a special forces team who drugged his whole squad with Doll... the only one unaffected was Guile as he did not take his rations on the day in question... Guile was forced to kill his best friend Charlie, as he was, under Bisons control, about to kill a child.

Bison was also responsible for the death of Ryu's master and also his best friend... Ken! :O Or so he would have us believe... later in the series, Ken is revealed to have taken Balrog's place as one of the 4 lords of Shadowlaw (which I thought was a very interesting plot point!!)

Anyway, I'd recommend for any Street Fighter fan to attempt to track the book down and read it as it's an interesting take on the franchise we all know and love...

It's by Masaomi Kanzaki and was released around 1994.

If anybody has any questions on the story, i'll review the books again and see if I can answer them for you!

What Next?

So, as I won the Resident Evil competition with my "You Are Dead" piece (see previous post), I have been able to request pieces of art from a few different artists, the majority of which I have requested some SugarSkull art, as I thought it'd be cool to see other peoples takes on my own character! Thinking about this led me to a crossroads as to what to draw next for the website...

Should it be SugarSkulls nemesis's (nemesis? Nemesi?); - The Undesirables... a team of super powered and frankly undesirable characters working against SugarSkull from the shadows?

Or should it be a piece from one of my favourite childhood (and adulthood) cartoons;- Masters of the Universe? I'm currently very inspired by the MOTU classics toy line and no doubt would pull influence from this!

I've got an idea for a Batman spoof, that if you're outside of Liverpool (possibly the UK) you may not neccesarily get... very simple idea "Kick Ass"-like idea...

Should it be one of 3 other original characters from the "Bearfighter Universe"?

The Greenman; hailing from a ravaged near-future- mysteriously powered, is he a green skinned terrorist .... or is he a hero, caught in the middle of an elaborate government plot?

Do you want to see more of SugarSkull; newly embued with the power to control dimensional forces and attempting to locate his lost, and possibly dead parents.. and what do the Undesirables have to do with this?

Knowledge, or "K" as she's simply known, a young beautiful girl with an enormous capacity to learn... who is linked to the internet and possesses immense inventive skills... but will she use the power for good.... or for bad?

Should it be my own line-up of Marvel's greatest superhero team; The Avengers? Of course Iron Man will be in there, but who else? I've thought long and hard about a "dream team" of Earths Mightiest Heroes... and this image would portray that!

Finally, should it be of Dragonball Z? DBZ was and still is a favourite anime of mine because of the way the characters and story progressed and we saw the characters grow from being kids, to adults... This would be no generic DBZ pic, piled full of Super Saiyans (although they will be there)... but more of an ecclectic collection of some of the excellently designed characters of the beloved anime!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... if you wouldn't mind travelling to my humble abode- Bearfighter.co.uk and placing your vote, I would appreciate it very much! :D
